The
Environment
Isla Fresia is located
in the midst of Lake Puyehue, 600 miles south of
Santiago de Chile. It extends for about 1000 acres
of unfenced land, rising 600 feet above the lake.
Lake Puyehue was
formed by an ancient glacier in an area where not
long ago activity from a dozen or so near-by volcanoes
was quite common. The area lies at the foot
of the Andes, close to the border with Argentina,
and was visited by the first white settlers only
some 80 years ago.
Our parents immigrated
from Europe during the late thirties, settled on
the island, and dedicated their lives to self-sufficient
agriculture and to eventual hosting of paying guests.

Red
stag was first introduced in the late sixties,
and the breed has reproduced since in complete
freedom. Later, also fallow deer and mufflon
sheep were introduced, set free, and have
fully adapted to their new environment.
Wild goats already lived on the island when
our first family members arrived. |
The island terrain, covered
by bushy grassland and temperate rain forest,
makes for a combination of hilly treks.
Several hiking circuits allow hunters to
reach more than 20 conveniently located
hide-outs, with the option to hunt while
walking.

Typical treks take
around 3 hours, returning a joyful, hungry, and
exhausted hunter home to the lodge located on the
northern side of the island.
